Day 21-23 - A bird in the hand
Another travel day. Today would be the final push into the San Diego area. The plan was to grab a campsite just down the I5 for a night, then two nights in SD. Or, three nights in SD. The two state parks near the I5 were just too much money ($35 with no services), and had no phone reception or WiFi. Couldn't believe it. They weren't that far off the highway. Start the search in SD for a site.
Only found one site that looked 1/2 decent online. The sites appeared close together, but full service was only $32 (plus a $6 booking fee; arrrgh!). Searched various times during stops on the way into town, but nothing appeared better. The trek into SD was slow. Lots of traffic, a few stops to look at campsites. Drove to the above RV park only discover the gate locked. Only open until 5:00pm!!! It was 6:30 now, so I parked the truck and continued my search. Took one last look at their website and found you could register online. Once booked, you would receive the gate code. I was in business.
Picked a site that looked OK with nothing else reserved next to it. Had the feeling the sites would be one on top of the other, so having a neighbour wouldn't be ideal. Drove into the site (3 mile winding paved access road with a 15mph speed limit), and set-up the trailer. The next morning I assessed my surroundings. Didn't need to worry about being next to anyone. The sites had loads of room between each other, and plenty of trees. Could easily spend two more nights here.
I was to meet up with Matt & Vicky (flying in from BC) in SD and traveling to Baja together for a week. I'd need reception here or WiFi at the campsite in order to hash out any last minute details. This site had both.
Spent the next two days taking care of last minute arrangements (e.g. driving insurance, ICBC isn't valid in MX), and got in a short road ride on the moto.
Lookout Baja, here we come :)
